South Okinawa

The Southern part of the main Okinawa Island (Okinawa Honto) is the most populated area of Okinawa. The capital of Okinawa prefecture Naha City with a population of over 300,000 people can be found in the South. Naha Airport also known as Okinawa Airport the main transportation hub for all the Ryukyu Islands is also located in the South part of Okinawa.
The cities of South Okinawa have some of the best shopping on the Island including Naha’s many shopping districts Kokusai St., Heiwa Dori, Makishi Market, Omorimachi (Shintoshin shopping area), and many shopping malls. It’s hard not to find what you’re looking for no matter if it is brand name goods, that perfect souvenir or supplies for daily life.
Outside of the cities most of the south’s industry is focused on agriculture such as sugar cane and purple yam farming. Over the past few years however Southern Okinawa has seen more development with new beaches being built and new resort Hotels opening. This small development boom has helped more visitors to Okinawa discover some of the hidden treasure and beauty this area has to offer.
Some of the most severe battles of World War Two including the “typhoon of steel” took place at the bottom of Okinawa Island. Because of these tragic events taking place here many important historical sites, monuments, war memorials, and museums are located in the Southern part of the main Okinawa Island.
