Ninto-zei-seki, Miyako-jima Okinawa Japan

Okinawa Japan, Ninto-zei-seki, Miyako-jima, tax

Miyakojima Island has a history of suffering under heavy taxation, called Ninto-zei until the beginning of the Meiji Period at the end of the 19th century. Before the Meiji Period the tax was levied on every islander taller than the 1.4 meter tall stone known as Ninto-zei-seki. Until 1903 the people of Miyakojima Island were measured using this stone. If someone was taller than the 143 cm stone they had to pay taxes. Men paid their tax in millet, a type of grain. Women generally paid their obligatory tax with cloth.
