If you are looking for a great discount go to the Hamby Flea Market. The items here are used items that people are selling themselves or are resellers of overstock and discontinued items from local merchants. This is one of the few places in Okinawa that you can haggle items, plus there are food stands and music playing, it’s a good atmosphere.
Come down and join every Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 11pm at Hamby Town in Chatan.

On August 16th the 3 day karate tournament in Okinawa came to an end. Fans from over 40 countries came together to watch the tournament. At the end of the tournament they had a closing ceremony and finished with Okinawa Kachusha Dance at the Loisir Hotel in Naha.

On August 8th 2009 in Naha the outer edge of Typhoon Morakot roared past Okinawa early that Thursday afternoon, lashing the island with wind gusts as high as 65 mph and stranding thousands of summer holiday air travelers. U.S. bases on Okinawa reverted to seasonal Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 4 at 5 p.m. The center of the ninth named storm of the season rumbled 210 miles south of Okinawa at 2 p.m., packing Category 1 hurricane-strength winds, with gusts of 115 mph.

The local Japanese culture was celebrated at the annual Japan Night at the Seattle Mariners game against the Minnesota Twins at Safeco Field in Seattle on August 3rd.
The pre-game show featured a Taiko and dance performance by 80 members of Okinawa Kenjin Club of the State of Washington and Okinawa Yuai Club from Vancouver Canada. This is their second time to play at the field. A ceremonial first pitch by Tsutomu Iwamoto (a former professional pitcher of the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan) and a national anthem by Echo Chorus, a local Japanese women's chorus group.

The 2009 Okinawa Traditional Karate World Tournament has started at Okinawa Prefectural Hall of Martial Arts in Naha city.
Opening ceremonies and demonstrations took place on August 14th in the afternoon at the Okinawa Prefectural Martial Arts Hall, adjacent to Onoyama Park, with full karatedo and kobudo competitions Saturday.

The Yonabaru Festival is held every year and on August 15-16 it will be held in the Udun-yama Youth Square in Okinawa!
Yonabaru Festival has evolved from more than 400 years of inherited traditions, where residents called upon the gods to provide a bountiful crops harvest and to chase devils away. Starting at 3 on Saturday the eisa dancing, tug-of-war and beating of the taiko drum doesn’t stop until Sunday evening.

Tonight Linkinpark will be playing a concert at the Mihama athletic field in Okinawa! The park opens at 6 pm and starts at 8. Linkinpark is a popular band; I think its going to be a great turnout there tonight!

The city of Naha has started a new Japanese class for foreigners living in Okinawa.
There are about 2,000 foreigners living in Okinawa prefecture and most of them live in Naha city.
Many of them have trouble understanding information in Japanese so Naha city has decided to start Japanese classes for people who need help.

At the Sakaemachi Market there is a tiny dumpling shop that opens only late at night. To get there you will have to go through a narrow street where all shops are closed and you will find an orange banner with a few counter seats and mini size table. They have Xiaolongbao also known as dumpling soup, Gyoza dumpling, Okinawa style rice ball, deep fried fish, and deep fried vegetables for a reasonable price. Only 500yen ($5 US) for 10 big juicy dumplings!
