The 50th Anniversary of the establishment of Ginowan City part 2

This article carries on from the last one.

This time we drive through from Isa Junction to Futenma Intersection and walk around Route 330!

ginowan futenma junction

This picture shows "Futenma Deigo (Indian coral bean) Dori"street running from Isa Intersection to Futenam Intersection.

As you can see, there are hardly any "Deigo" trees. Most of them are Momotamana (Sea Almond) trees on the street.

"Why on earth did they name it 'Deigo Dori'?"

Actually around 1955 or later, the owner of the bakery "Jiro Bakery" located on "Deigo Dori" started planting "Deigo" both sides of the street. That's where the name "Deigo Dori" came from.

Boy, now the most dominant tree is Momotamana! If you count Deigo trees, you might find 9 to 10 of them. :)

deigo street

This is also located on "Deigo Dori"--- "FUTENMA ANTIQUE MALL."

There used to be a movie theater called "Grand Palace" here. Four of six to seven movie theaters in Ginowan City were concentrated in Futenma in those days. Futenma used to be an entertainment district!

Now we are going on to Route 330 from "Deigo Dori."

okinawa history

Here I would like to explain with the map of 1960 to 1970s, around the time of Okinawa's reversion to Japan in 1972.

Buildings are colored in purple, yellow, etc. Please refer to the following legend.

Gray...Photo Studuo

Aqua Blue...General Store

Brown...Watch, Jewel, Eye Glasses, Retailing

Orange...Clothing, Bed Clothing, Shoes

Dark Green...Grocery Store

Purple...Japanese Restaurant, Bar, Saloon

Blue...Diner, Restaurant, Small Restaurant

Pink...Barber, Beauty Shop

Yellow..Public Institution

The first street on the right you can see after entering Route 330 is called "Suzuran (Lily Bell) Dori."

The locals named it because they aimed to develop here as "a beautiful, attractive street like 'suzuran'."

As you can see many purple-colored buildings, this street has many restaurants and bars and street lights with round-shaped lumps modeled after "suzuran" are lit up at night.

There were also many restaurants and bars for U.S. military personnel. Especially on their pay days, the street gave them discount service and was full of customers.

okinawa diner

This diner called "Daigaku Shokudo," located on "Suzuran Dori" around 1970s, is still open!

This is getting long, so I have to go now.

I will tell about Mr. Shinzan Yamada next time!
